CUTTING MOMENTS II

IIn the Cold Cuts episode of Douglas Buck’s Cutting Moments (1996), Danny, David and Pappy contend with how a short film can pack such a mighty thematic punch. Danny and David get into some Fact-Checking and take Pappy for a tour of director Douglas Buck. This is when the mindbucking really begins: each of them realizes the level of craft and control he had when making this movie. To everyone’s surprise, Danny finally comes around and admits that Cutting Moments is actually about pedophilia and its consequences in Lingering Feelings. All it took was listening back to the podcast and taking a week for some introspection.

The conversation continues with Themes, where the fellas consider how the film represents the breakdown of the American nuclear family as well as the cinematic technique of hindsight. In Takebacks, all three hosts walk back any potentially disparaging remarks they may or may not have made at Douglas Buck’s expense. Instead, they shower him with praise for what accomplished in Cutting Moments.

In Overthinking It, Pappy dives into Laura Mulvey’s concept of the Male Gaze and some good ol’ fashioned psychoanalytic theory. David and Danny quickly agree that the Male Gaze controls the mother. But the conversation deepens when they realize how Cutting Moments represents the breakdown of the Male Gaze and the mother’s struggle to find meaning in her world without it. Surprisingly, Danny suggests the addition of pedophilia is the element of the film that truly Mindbucks us. The philosophical round table ends after a few final questions: does the wife turn the gaze against her husband? Do we, as viewers, keep the mother in the Male Gaze?

In Next Week’s Movie, David and Pappy reveal what they will watch next to Danny. It’s a movie that Danny’s been avoiding for years.
