FORGIVE US
THE EXTREME CINEMA & HORROR MOVIE PODCAST
The most disturbing films of all-time. Yes, that’s our subject matter. They’re violent. Depraved. Vile. And… absurd. The wild world of extreme cinema puts a unique spin on the horror genre—if you can even call it that. And we’re ready to wade into the waters of effed up films with you. Or maybe so you don’t have to. Join Danny, David and Pappy as we navigate some aggressive cinematic terrain.
DANNY
Cinephile and conversationalist by heart, Danny is a long lover of movies, and he’ll tell you about it if you ask him. Maybe even if you don’t. While he’d probably deny it, he’s also the reason why That’s Dark exists. Seriously. His close friends wanted to exploit the way he connects emotionally to movies. So, they created a podcast as a means to subject Danny to films that will make him squirm for their amusement.
Historically, you can find Danny somewhere on the periphery of extreme cinema. Terrified by the potential threat of seeing something he can’t un-see and drawn in by a natural morbid curiosity, Danny’s read many a plot summary but never really watched extreme films. Now, all that’s changed. He’s the proud host of a podcast, one that forces him to watch movies he never thought he’d watch.
Martyrs, Cutting Moments, Grotesque, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Murder-Set-Pieces, and yes. A Serbian Film. You better believe we’re covering the worst of the worst or best of the best, depending on your worldview. And that’s just in season one. But if searching for your limits as a movie-goer isn’t for you, no worries and only a little judgment. We also keep tabs on traditional horror movies.
HOT TAKES
TOO HARD
Every movie starts with Hot Takes. Call it a collection of gut reactions to what we’ve just watched—unfiltered reactions prompted by sensitive subject matter. And we let the uninformed commentary fly.
At the start of Cold Cuts, time has gone by since seeing the movie, giving us space to think about what we watched. And what we said previously. Here we offer a deeper conversation. Even if a movie doesn’t deserve it.
TOUGH MOVIES, SOFT GUYS
COLD CUTS
Devil’s advocate by nature and sound engineer by trade, David is the only extreme movie buddy you’ll ever need. Why? There hasn’t a movie yet that he wouldn’t watch. It takes a lot for a film to shake David. So, when it happens, you know that film is probably pretty serious. Or maybe it strikes a nerve that perhaps only he possesses.
Thanks to his contrarian-for-the-sake-of-it attitude, you can expect David to throw a metaphorical wrench into the conversation should the opportunity present itself. Resistant to rules, he scoffs at structure and organization. Though leave a dirty cup on this counter for too long and suddenly his world is filled with too much chaos. David’s not the type to tow the company line, even his own. But Danny and Pappy know that. So, they plan ahead.
PAPPY
An overly competitive English professor, Pappy is a lifelong fan of both extreme cinema and robust debate. In fact, people often confuse his conversational zeal for anger. To say he came up with an idea for a podcast would be inaccurate. He came up with a plan to entrap Danny into watching Martyrs, and that plan came in the form of a podcast.
Pappy has always been fascinated with extreme movies, rarely refusing to watch something the first time David asks. Does he suffer from morbid curiosity? Yes. But extreme cinema also lets him think critically about something that’s difficult to explain. He’s imaginative enough to draw a connection between a B-movie and Plato. But he’s unaware of the 72 minutes he needs to explain it. Needless to say, brevity isn’t one of his strengths.
